Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town has got a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific rail and road connections.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
