Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the first century AD, and the village which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous suspected witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry shut down, all the same it remains a thriving and developing town today, principally due to the nearness to the capital, and its outstanding road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
