Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town that developed round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, crafting such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry shut down, though it is still a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the city of london, and its quality rail and road connections.

The town is situated beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
