The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its plants closed down, nonetheless it still is a flourishing and booming town today, largely because of its proximity to the capital, plus the quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
