A Saxon community followed after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed witches.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, predominantly due to the nearness to the capital, and its excellent road and rail communications.
