Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many alleged witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is positioned beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
