Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, around thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of around 110,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the commune that expanded surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main agitators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many presumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, making items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industry went bust, though it is still a successful and booming town today, mostly due to its close proximity to the capital, and the outstanding road and rail communications.
