Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the community which developed around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were ultimately put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a serious industrial town during the 19th century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the 1980's, because much of its manufacturing plants went bust, though it still is a successful and growing town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the city of london, plus the first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is located beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
