The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a drive of some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon camp came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.
