A Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its first class road and rail communications.
