Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of approximately thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of around 111,500 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the village that developed surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to its nearness to the capital, plus the first rate road and rail connections.

The town is positioned just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
