River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry went bust, nevertheless it still is a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail communications.
