The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the village that grew up in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous alleged witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its industrial facilities went bust, nevertheless it still is a successful and developing town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, and its first rate rail and road links.

The town stands beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
