The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were subsequently executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a serious industrial town in the 19th Cent, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into considerable decline in the 1980's, since much of its industry closed down, though it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, primarily because of its closeness to London, and the terrific rail and road connections.

The town is positioned close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
