Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many assumed witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its manufacturers shut down, all the same it remains a thriving and growing town today, largely due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its exceptional rail and road connections.

The town lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
