Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the village which grew up in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town during the 19th C, making goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its plants closed, though it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the city of london, plus its superb road and rail links.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
