Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of around thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

A Saxon camp followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable industrial town in the 19th century, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.
