It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the settlement which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its plants shut down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, largely because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its first class rail and road connections.
