The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about the first century AD, and the town that grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its manufacturers shut down, though it remains a thriving and blooming town today, mainly due to the nearness to London, plus the first rate road and rail communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
