River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the community which grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry closed down, though it is still a successful and growing town today, for the most part due to the proximity to the capital, plus the exceptional rail and road communications.
