The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the locals of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious industrial town in the 19th century, making such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline during the 1980's, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, but it is still a successful and blooming town today, mostly due to the nearness to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road connections.
