The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 miles from central London. The town has a population of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the village that grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit a few times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industry closed, even so it is still a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to its closeness to London, and its superb road and rail communications.
