The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the settlement that evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were ultimately executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many suspected witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry went bust, though it still is a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the close proximity to London, and the excellent rail and road connections.
