Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of about 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were later hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed, though it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, and the exceptional road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 kilometers drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
