Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the town which grew up around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading culprits were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into considerable decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, in spite of this it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to the nearness to the capital, and its first class road and rail communications.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
