A Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many supposed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.
