The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of roughly thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.
