Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the village that expanded surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a significant manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the 1980's, since much of its production facilities went bust, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, and the first class road and rail communications.

The town sits beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
