Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the village which developed in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered serious decline in the 1980's, as much of its industrial facilities went bust, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, mainly because of its closeness to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail connections.

Chelmsford stands close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
