Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, about thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of around 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the settlement that evolved in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were consequently executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Through the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a considerable industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry closed down, even so it is still a thriving and growing town today, principally due to the proximity to London, plus the excellent rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is positioned adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
