Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of about 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of around 110,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the community that evolved round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous alleged witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, yet it still is a successful and developing town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus the exceptional road and rail links.
