Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the commune which expanded in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous alleged witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit several times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry closed down, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, largely due to the proximity to the capital, plus its first rate rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is located close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
