The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the commune which grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, as much of its plants closed, even so it still is a thriving and developing town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail communications.

The town is set just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
