Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the town that grew up around the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a major industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck many times.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry shut down, yet it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part because of its closeness to London, and the superb road and rail connections.

The town sits just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
