Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry shut down, all the same it still is a successful and growing town today, primarily due to the proximity to London, and its exceptional road and rail communications.
