The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of about 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were subsequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.
