The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the commune that expanded surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading agitators were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline in the 1980's, since a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, predominantly because of its proximity to London, plus its quality road and rail connections.

The town is situated beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
