An Anglo Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were consequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many suspected witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry closed down, even so it is still a thriving and expanding town today, mostly due to the nearness to the capital, plus its first rate rail and road communications.
