Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of about thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.
