River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the commune that grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous suspected witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a vital industrial town during the 19th C, producing goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its manufacturing facilities went bust, although it continues to be a successful and growing town today, mainly due to the proximity to the capital, and the first rate road and rail communications.

The town is located beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
