Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the village which evolved in the area of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were later executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a vital industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, all the same it is still a successful and booming town today, mostly due to its nearness to the city of london, and its outstanding road and rail links.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 26 km from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
