Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the community that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many presumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such items as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit many times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the capital, plus the good road and rail communications.
