River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the town that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, crafting goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and blooming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its good rail and road communications.
