Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of approximately 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town that grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, making items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the capital, plus the excellent rail and road communications.

The town lies near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
