The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of around 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the town that expanded around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were later executed in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless assumed witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a considerable industrial town during the 19th C, crafting goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, yet it still is a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the excellent rail and road links.

Chelmsford is set close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
