The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of around 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up in the locality of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were later put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a serious manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline in the 1980's, when much of its industries ceased to be profitable, though it remains a thriving and developing town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its superb rail and road connections.
