The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the village that grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were thereafter hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a serious industrial town in the 19th C, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry shut down, though it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the capital, and the terrific road and rail communications.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 26 km from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
