The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.
