The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of around thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the commune which expanded surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading culprits were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a serious manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a successful and booming town today, largely due to its close proximity to the city of london, and its exceptional road and rail connections.
