Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the village which expanded surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were accordingly hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless supposed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its industry closed down, though it still is a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly due to the nearness to London, plus its outstanding road and rail connections.

Chelmsford lies adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately sixteen mls from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
