The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of around 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of roughly 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the commune that grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were later executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th C, making such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, plus the excellent road and rail communications.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 km drive from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
