Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit several times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturers closed down, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, largely because of its nearness to the city of london, and the excellent road and rail connections.
