The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the town which grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck a number of times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it still is a successful and booming town today, principally due to the closeness to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail connections.

The town is positioned beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 mls from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
