Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were thereafter hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many alleged witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, mainly due to its proximity to the capital, and the first rate road and rail connections.

The town stands near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
