River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the village that evolved around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its proximity to London, plus its quality rail and road communications.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
