The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of approximately 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to the proximity to the capital, plus the excellent road and rail connections.
