A Saxon community followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it remains a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to its nearness to London, and its first class road and rail communications.
