The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the town which evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were accordingly put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industrial facilities went bust, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, largely because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus its superb road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
