The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were ultimately hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town during the 19th century, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
