Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of roughly 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).
