Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the village that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a significant manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its production facilities closed, yet it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly due to the closeness to the capital, plus the quality road and rail links.
