Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, making goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industries went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to its closeness to London, and the superb road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
