The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a populace of about 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the community which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th Cent, making such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because much of its industries shut down, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, principally due to its nearness to London, and the excellent road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 km drive from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
