Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the community that evolved around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its plants closed down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to its nearness to the capital, and its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is located beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
