Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around 32 mls from central London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the first century AD, and the community that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading instigators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its industrial facilities went bust, all the same it remains a thriving and expanding town today, primarily because of its proximity to London, and the good rail and road connections.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
