The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were consequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many supposed witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its plants shut down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the capital, and the terrific road and rail links.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
