The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.
