River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the town which evolved around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its production facilities went bust, though it is still a successful and expanding town today, principally due to the nearness to the capital, plus its exceptional rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is situated adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
