The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of around 110,000 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the settlement that evolved round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, but it remains a flourishing and booming town today, largely because of its closeness to the capital, plus its first class road and rail communications.

The town sits beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
