Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment which developed round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading culprits were accordingly hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its manufacturing plants closed down, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the capital, plus its first class rail and road communications.

The town is situated near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
