River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry shut down, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, and the first class rail and road communications.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
