An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were ultimately executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, making such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit many times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its manufacturers went bust, even so it remains a successful and expanding town today, predominantly because of its nearness to London, and the first class rail and road communications.
