The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the commune which expanded surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its factories closed down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the capital, and its exceptional rail and road links.
