The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of about 111,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the settlement that developed surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main instigators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its factories went bust, even so it still is a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, plus its quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
