Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
