The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the encampment which developed surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading culprits were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many assumed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its production facilities ceased to be profitable, but it remains a thriving and blooming town today, mainly because of its proximity to the capital, and the exceptional rail and road connections.
