The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of around 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which expanded around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the residents of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, as much of its industry closed down, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, largely due to its proximity to the city of london, and its excellent road and rail links.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly 26 km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
