Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village which grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many alleged witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a successful and blooming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, and the first rate road and rail connections.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 26 km from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
