River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the citizens of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

Throughout the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its manufacturing plants closed, even so it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, principally due to its close proximity to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail communications.
