The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the encampment that evolved surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into serious decline in the 1980's, when much of its industry went bust, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mostly because of its closeness to London, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
