The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its manufacturing facilities closed down, even so it remains a successful and growing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the city of london, and the outstanding rail and road communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
