River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the commune that grew up in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were consequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, crafting products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its terrific rail and road connections.

The town is located just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
