Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industrial facilities closed down, though it is still a successful and growing town today, primarily because of its nearness to the city of london, plus its first rate rail and road communications.
