River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the commune which developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was documented as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading culprits were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, making items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its exceptional road and rail communications.
