The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industrial facilities closed down, but it remains a thriving and booming town today, primarily due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the quality rail and road connections.
