Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the village which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the people of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town in the 19th C, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, largely due to the nearness to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is located just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's approximately 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
