An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were accordingly executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a lot of its industry closed down, though it still is a flourishing and blooming town today, mostly due to its nearness to the city of london, plus its first class road and rail communications.
