The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town in the 19th C, crafting goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, predominantly due to the closeness to the capital, and its quality rail and road communications.
