The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the village which expanded round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless suspected witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, making such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry closed down, though it remains a successful and expanding town today, largely due to the proximity to the city of london, and the first rate road and rail connections.

The town can be found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 kilometres from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
