The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the town that developed surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many alleged witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a serious manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its production facilities shut down, nevertheless it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part because of its proximity to London, and the excellent road and rail links.

The town can be found near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
