Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its manufacturers went bust, even so it remains a successful and growing town today, principally because of its proximity to London, plus the superb road and rail communications.
