The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

An Anglo Saxon community followed after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.
