The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a population of about 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the commune that expanded in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were thereafter put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the 19th century, crafting goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, since much of its industrial facilities closed down, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to its closeness to the city of london, and its first rate road and rail communications.

The town sits just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
