The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a populace of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the town which grew up in the area of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the people of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a vital manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its factories went bust, even so it remains a successful and growing town today, mostly due to its nearness to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail links.

The town sits beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
