The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. The town has a population of approximately 111,500 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the village that evolved around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

Throughout the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its factories ceased to be profitable, though it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, and its terrific rail and road connections.

The town stands adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
