Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, about thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of approximately 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.
