The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of around 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about the first century AD, and the commune that grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many alleged witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a significant industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the 1980's, when much of its manufacturing facilities shut down, even so it still is a flourishing and booming town today, primarily due to its close proximity to the capital, and the outstanding rail and road communications.
