Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has got a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were later executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry closed, in spite of this it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the city of london, and its terrific rail and road links.

Chelmsford can be found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London.
