Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a serious industrial town in the 19th C, making products such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a flourishing and developing town today, mainly due to its proximity to London, and its excellent road and rail connections.
