An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a vital industrial town during the nineteenth century, crafting such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five years before (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the capital, plus the excellent road and rail communications.

The town sits adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's about 26 km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
