The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, around 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of about 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the community which grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless supposed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the 19th C, crafting products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry closed down, though it is still a thriving and growing town today, largely due to the close proximity to London, plus the exceptional road and rail links.

The town lies beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 mls drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
