The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a car journey of around thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.
