Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, around thirty two miles from central London. The town has a population of around 110,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly the 1st century AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon settlement superseded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into an important industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit many times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its plants closed, in spite of this it still is a successful and expanding town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to London, and its quality rail and road links.

The town lies just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 kilometres from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
