A Saxon camp came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless 100 years later being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a lot of its industrial facilities ceased to be profitable, though it is still a successful and developing town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail communications.
