Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a driving distance of about thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the commune that evolved around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main instigators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many suspected witches.

For many centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, making such products as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing in WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the 1980's, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, yet it remains a thriving and growing town today, largely because of its nearness to the capital, and its good rail and road connections.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
