Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a population of around 111,500 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the village which evolved surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its industry went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, principally because of its closeness to the capital, and the first rate rail and road communications.

The town is positioned close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 16 mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
