Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, around 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were thereafter put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous alleged witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck several times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry closed, although it is still a successful and booming town today, principally due to its nearness to the city of london, plus the excellent road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
