Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the community which evolved surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the main culprits were ultimately hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, as much of its industry went bust, though it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to its proximity to the capital, and the first class road and rail connections.

The town lies just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
