The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Can and Chelmer rivers, about thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nevertheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the main culprits were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
