The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. The town has got a populace of about 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were consequently hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th century, producing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly due to the closeness to London, plus its excellent rail and road links.
