The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. The town has a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

A Saxon settlement followed after the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading instigators were consequently hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into considerable decline in the 1980's, because a good deal of its industry shut down, yet it remains a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail communications.
