The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the commune that grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry closed down, in spite of this it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, for the most part due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
