The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, about thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the community which grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through serious decline during the 1980's, because much of its manufacturing facilities went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, principally because of its nearness to the capital, plus the superb road and rail communications.
