Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,000 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the encampment that grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important industrial town in the 19th century, crafting such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed down, though it remains a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly due to its close proximity to the capital, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
