The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the settlement which grew up in the area of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry closed, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, predominantly because of its nearness to the city of london, and the terrific road and rail connections.

The town is located near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six kilometres car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
