River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the encampment that evolved surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main culprits were later executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry closed, however it remains a thriving and blooming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the city of london, plus its first class road and rail connections.

The town is situated just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
