Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.
