The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of about 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,500 occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into considerable decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its production facilities closed down, though it remains a successful and booming town today, mainly due to the nearness to London, and the superb rail and road connections.
