Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a significant industrial town in the 19th C, making goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit several times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly forty five years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, although it continues to be a flourishing and growing town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the city of london, plus the first rate road and rail connections.

Chelmsford stands just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
