The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of some 111,500 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the instigators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless alleged witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industries shut down, nonetheless it is still a thriving and growing town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, and its first class rail and road links.
