The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of roughly thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were consequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a significant industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry shut down, even so it is still a thriving and growing town today, predominantly because of its closeness to the city of london, plus the first class rail and road communications.
