River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in around the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable industrial town during the nineteenth century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it continues to be a successful and booming town today, principally due to the nearness to London, and its first class road and rail communications.

The town stands beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
