The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the rivers Chelmer and Can, about 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the village which grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its modern name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were later put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many suspected witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants went bust, though it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the city of london, and its first class road and rail links.
